5 Ways To Fight For Breakthrough From God
Several years ago, I longed for breakthrough and found a breakthrough self-coaching course. One of the lessons defined breakthrough and as I pondered the meaning, these words bubbled up and flowed out of my mouth — thank You, God breakthrough is coming, breakthrough is here! Life was in those words – breakthrough from God was mine!
I was filled with faith and excitement. But as can happen with prophetic words, the initial excitement faded when life happened and the rubber met the road. And there was also a process to the promise.
This is why it’s important to write down (journal) these moments and revisit them often.
Breakthrough Comes In Seed Form
Even when the breakthrough seems distant, we can thank Him for the beginning of breakthrough. That’s what I did when those words bubbled up – I thanked Him for the beginning of breakthrough and for the breakthrough that was to come.
Bill Johnson says God often gives us breakthrough or answers to prayer in seed form. We’re asking for the oak tree and He gives us the acorn. It’s up to us to steward the acorn until it becomes an oak tree. And within that oak tree is the ability to reproduce hundreds of oak trees.
Part of stewarding the seed is fighting for breakthrough, but also with cultivating whatever we’ve received in seed form – I’ll share more below.Â
From Seed To Breakthrough From God
Several years ago I was waiting for the healing of my brokenness. It seemed everyone around me was experiencing healing and freedom, but me. Then one day as I was getting ready for the day, I heard these words – I will turn for you your mourning into dancing. I jumped for joy that I clearly heard God and that He spoke specifically to my healing.Â
I hadn’t read that verse before that I could recall so I quickly dug into the Word and found it…Â
You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness. Psalm 30:11 ESV
Then several months later at a ladies conference, I heard – you will take up your tambourine and go out to dance with the joyful. And I heard again, I will turn for you your mourning into dancing.
I wrote those words in my journal and did some research and I was astounded to find the verses were connected. Psalm 30:11 cross references to Jeremiah 31:4. To say I was overjoyed is an understatement.Â
Again I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt, O virgin of Israel! You shall again be adorned with your tambourines, And shall go forth in the dances of those who rejoice. Jeremiah 31:4
These were key verses I stood on as I prayed and waited for my healing. I believe this was the beginning of breakthrough – in seed form. It was the mindset shift that came when God spoke, I believed Him, and I activated my faith by standing and contending with those words. And as He promised, the healing came several years later – the oak tree (a baby one 😄).Â
The above example covers two of the five ways to fight for breakthrough which I’ll share below.
5 Ways to Fight For Breakthrough from God
1. Feed On And Fight With His Word And Nature
- God is faithful. And if He was faithful before, He’ll be faithful again.
Dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness. Psalm 37:3b
In the original language feed means companion, keep company with, feed, cultivate. So it’s to keep companionship or company with His faithfulness by meditating/chewing on it regularly. Journaling is a key tool for this (see #3 below).
We feed on His faithfulness by declaring it out loud and recalling all the ways He’s been faithful in the past.

- God is a promise-keeping, covenant-keeping God. If He makes a promise, He keeps it. (see Deuteronomy 7:12, Isaiah 54:10, Psalm 89:34)
We throw ourselves upon His promise-keeping, covenant-keeping nature by declaring it along with the times He’s kept His promises to us and to others.

- He’s the God of the impossible. Nothing is too hard or impossible for Him (see Genesis 18:14, Jeremiah 32:17, Luke 1:37).
We fix ourselves upon His ability to do the impossible by declaring it and meditating on all the ways He’s done the impossible in the past – in our lives and the lives of others (Genesis 18:14; Exodus 14; Luke 1:35-37).
2. Abide/Rest In Him
Spend intimate time with Him in worship, in His Word, in prayer and journaling (see below).
3. Journal

Journal the ways He’s been faithful, when He speaks, and His promises/words to you.
Journaling is a way to build a memorial to the Lord (Joshua 4:1-24) that you can revisit to encourage yourself in the Lord, to remember how He’s spoken to you, to feed on His faithfulness, and to strengthen yourself in the Lord as you wait on the fulfillment of the promises.
Journaling can be as simple as bullet points and phrases, or complete sentences if that’s more your personality. I write and date what He’s speaking, His faithfulness, etc. in what I call my Hearing God Journal.
4. Worship
Worship is for Him, but we benefit because we’re communing with Him which puts our focus on Him, gives us His perspective, and floods us with His love, joy, and peace. It’s also a great tool against the enemy and His lies. Â
Here’s a worship song that speaks to His faithfulness and His promise-keeping nature.
5. Promises/Prophetic Words
We fight with His promises and prophetic words over our lives.
The promise or prophetic word is the beginning of breakthrough from God – what He gives us in seed form (as shared above). It’s up to us to steward it.
This could be a promise that He’ll provide a job, house, or healing of your family, or it could be a specific prophetic word about His calling on your life.
The fight is the same – declare that promise or word out loud daily and when the lies come against you. Â
And our fight with those promises or words is how we show we’re expecting a breakthrough from God.
