Do You Ever Wonder “Why Am I Here”?

Many years ago I felt a stab in my heart when I found out my friends went to the beach without me – again.  The little girl inside wanted to scream and cry.  Those old feelings of rejection, being unloved and unworthy erupted to the surface again and only reinforced the underlying question –  why am I here?

Why Am I Here – From Wondering To Knowing

I used to wonder why I was born, why am I here on earth?  I had a rough upbringing and felt unloved and unwanted and couldn’t shake the pain of unworthiness and rejection.  And I wondered if I’d ever make anything of my life.

I knew on the one hand I was kind of smart and had some potential, but the web of lies that told me I was worthless, unloved and couldn’t do anything right seemed to overshadow all shred of truth.

Then I began a relationship with Jesus.  And I learned the truth, but the rejection, unworthiness and feeling unloved were so strong that they seemed to overrule the truth.

I cried out to God for healing and I finally broke free of those deeply embedded wounds and lies. I believed and felt the truth – that I’m worthy, I’m loved, I’m accepted, I have a purpose, I’m smart and I can make something of my life.

Then I began to discover that not only do I have worth in God’s eyes, but I’m on this planet for a reason.  I had the answer to the question – why am I here?

Puzzle Pieces - Do You Ever Wonder Why Am I Here?

I’m still in the discovery process of my overall purpose, but I have some of the puzzle pieces.

I know for certain I’m here to know Him.  Not just in my head, but to know Him experientially.  Click here for more on knowing Him experientially.

I also know I’m a teacher according to the redemptive gifts aka motivational gifts in Romans 12:6-8 (more on that in a future post).  People around me called out the gift before I even saw it in myself.

Then there’s my former job.  During a review, my boss said I have a gift with words.  I have an ability to eloquently communicate.

Then there’s the pull to see people healed of life’s hurts.

Then there’s the time of worship in May 2014 – God’s love and presence were very tangible.  My heart overflowed with a desire to see women experience God like this which I shared with  Him.  It was during this encounter He called me to start this blog.  And later I’d discover how this blog would be a platform for me to fulfill my purpose.

Then there are my life verses which all point to seeing people free and finding rest and possessing their promise land.

Not to mention a boatload of prophetic words that confirm and speak to even bigger parts of my calling which are yet to unfold.

Why You’re Here

Without question, one of the most important days of your life is the day you were born.  And another important day (or days) is when you discover why. It’s often a discovery process where the puzzle pieces fit together.

If you don’t already document how God speaks and is working in your life as well as your life experiences (puzzle pieces), I would encourage you to journal.  Here are some ideas for you to start with.

  • Look to the Word for His overall purpose for you.  That you’d know Him, you’d make Him known, you’d shine for Him, etc.
  • Journal and date the times when God spoke to you about your calling/purpose – whether through the Word or worship, His voice, others, etc.  For more on journaling, click here.
  • Make note of your gifts and talents – He gave you these to use for His purpose for your life.
  • Recognize your heart’s desires/dreams. Sometimes those are indicators.

Then pray into it and ask God to bring all the pieces together. And in time He will as you cooperate with Him in the process.

I hope this post offered some encouragement in your own discovery process of your purpose – why you’re here.
