How to Wait for Breakthrough When It’s Painful
The pressure to make a living and move into my destiny left me spiraling and stressed. I felt trapped under a mound of dirt with no way out. Waiting for breakthrough was painful.
Do This First
I couldn’t afford to stuff or ignore my emotions, so I allowed my pain to erupt out of me to the Lord – tears, snot, and all. I didn’t hold back.
Then This
Then, I thanked God with what I call prayer singing…singing my prayers to God.
I thank You, Lord, that You withhold no good thing from those who walk uprightly. The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek You lack no good thing (Psalm 34:10).
And if we being imperfect know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will You, my perfect heavenly Father give me good things to those that ask Him (Matthew 7:11).
And as I contended again the next day, I added…
It feels impossible, it feels hard, but God, thank You that nothing is too hard for You. You’ve made me to do impossible things. It seems like You’re not answering, but I know that’s not Your heart. Your Word tells me differently. Your nature and character, and my history with You tell me a different story. Even when I can’t see it, You’re working. Even when I can’t feel it, You’re working. You never stop, You never stop working.Â
Singing this took everything in me because it’s hard amid distressing emotions, but it’s important to let them out before standing on His Word.
Hope and Faith as You Wait for Breakthrough
As I sang, my countenance brightened with hope.
After I prayer sang those scriptures, I declared…
I can count it all joy as I go through this trial because the testing of my faith is producing perseverance, and when perseverance has had its way, I’ll be perfect and complete, lacking nothing (James 1:2-4).Â
I thanked Him for the trial and the testing of my faith so it could grow.
Then I happened to see the next day’s devotional cited the same scripture at the top. So God!
I’ve asked for an increase in faith in the past, and here’s the test. The process is unpleasant, but our faith must be tested. Faith is like a muscle – it needs to be worked out regularly and pushed against resistance so it can grow.
Faith pleases God. (Hebrews 11:6).
He wants us to put a demand on His Word by believing Him and speaking it.
And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak. 2 Corinthians 4:13 NKJV
I declared, Lord, I thank You that You bless the work of my hands and You command a blessing on my barns and all that I undertake (Deuteronomy 28:8, 12b).
Weapons to Use as You Wait for Breakthrough
He reminded me, as I battled, that I’m not just fighting for me, but for you – the women I’m called to serve.

So, although you may be battling for your healing (or other things), we use the same weapons to battle.Â
I used similar weapons in the past as I waited for and fought for my healing. I prayed the Word, I worshipped, and I said no to the enemy.
But here’s a new one…one in which I instantly feel His presence and peace.
After I implemented this practice, I learned from Aundi Kolber in Try Softer that singing calms the nervous system. Singing builds vagal tone (part of the nervous system), which is another way to say singing builds resilience in our nervous system.Â
I had to fight in years past for healing, for breakthrough, and I have to fight now for more healing and my destiny. The same is true for you.
It makes sense that there’s a battle for God’s promises/prophecies over our lives. Paul tells Timothy…
This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight. 1 Timothy 1:18 NKJV
Grab Hold of What’s Yours
The enemy comes against the Lord’s plan for us, but we have victory through Jesus, who paid for it on the Cross…we have to grab hold of it.

How do we grab hold of it?
- Pour out our hearts to the Lord – the thoughts and emotions that bubble up
- Fight with the promises and His Word
- Put a demand on His Word by believing it and speaking it out loud
- Declare His promises about your identity and His plans out loud every morning and when attacked
- Prayer sing His Word, promises, or whatever else He shows you
- Find scriptures that speak to your situation and declare them as shared in the first bullet point
- Seek emotional healing when you’re stuck and need help – go here for more info.Â
- Grow in your identity and the Word. For more, go here.Â
Waiting for breakthrough isn’t easy and it’s painful, but if we’re real about our feelings, pour them out, and then use the weapons He’s given us, we can walk in victory, peace, and joy and we’ll get to the other side. The breakthrough you gain will be breakthrough you can pass on to others.
